How to combat the interview nerves?
So you have been called for an interview. It is quite natural for you to feel nervous. However, if interview nerves overwhelm you and leave you unable to think coherently, you need to do something to minimize the effects. Make sure that you are well prepared for the interview. This should give you some confidence. Gather as much information as possible about the job and the company. Have a reasonably good understanding of what to expect during an interview.
Practice the interview with a friend and try out what you are going to say. You may be asked some nasty questions. Be prepared to face them as well. While practicing, make sure that you are satisfied with the way you sound. If you can’t find a friend, use a tape recorder. Don’t be put off thinking that you sound awful. Listen to the recordings as if they were someone else’s. Pay careful attention to the intonation. See if your voice sounds interested and convinced. Even if you can’t get these things right in the beginning, don’t despair. Remember that the whole point of this exercise is to practice until you achieve the desired results.
During the practice interview, do not use a script. Of course, you must have an idea of what you are going to say. But don’t stick to the exact same words each time. Remember this is not a recital. Try to say same things in different words. This will increase your confidence. It will also make sure that you sound natural during the interview.
Start early and leave enough time for the journey. Make sure you know how to get to the interview office; otherwise you will further increase your anxiety. Arrive in time.
Be positive about yourself. The fact that you have been invited for an interview itself shows that you are a good candidate. The interviewer has been impressed with your application and that is the reason you were called for the interview. Remain calm, be enthusiastic about the job and realistic about your strengths and weaknesses. Ask yourself what is the worst that can happen? You will look foolish and not get the job. That is all. Put this into perspective and you should be able to combat the interview nerves.
Are you afraid of looking nervous during the interview? Don’t worry. Most candidates look a bit nervous during the interview and interviewers are used to it. They will also try to do his/her best to put you at ease when you arrive.
If you still can’t help looking nervous, try walking around before the interview. This exercise will release some adrenaline, and should make you feel better. Breathe deeply.
If you are worried that your hands will be sweating because of your nervousness, don’t initiate a handshake. If your hands are liable to shake, don’t have a cup of tea. Listen to yourself and try to avoid speaking too much or too fast.
